Merriam Webster defines self-awareness as, “The capacity for introspection and the ability to recognize oneself as an individual separate from the environment and other individuals.” Self-awareness is key for career success. People who are more self-aware tend to perform better at work, get more promotions and lead more effectively. Companies with more self-aware professionals have shown better and stronger performance. The greater your awareness of your strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs and emotions, the more likely you are to feel grounded while also giving others a sense of trust in understanding who you are and where you’re coming from. Self-awareness also allows you to understand other people, their motivations and how they may be reacting with you in ways that are masking a deeper issue or fear within them.
It’s common for us, as individuals, to assume that we are self-aware, but it is helpful to have a relative scale for awareness because at the end of the day, all of us have the potential to grow in awareness. This course will give you a foundational understanding of what it is and the tools to gauge how self-aware you truly are.
Before we continue on with the course, it’s important to make a note of something. You need to be aware enough about yourself to know that there are areas for improvement. It’s a bit of a paradox in that self-awareness is needed to know there are areas to improve your self-awareness. However, if you can go through this course and be as honest as possible with yourself, you will be well on your way to becoming the best version of yourself possible.
