But It’s My Job!

While all of us have jobs and lives where we need to be reactive at times, there are many of us who have jobs where being reactive is an essential part of our daily routines. For example, an administrative assistant, a fireman or a call-center rep are all positions where being reactive is a core part of the job and of course, there’s nothing wrong with being reactive in these cases.

Even if your position is one where reactivity is a key part of your daily routine, there still may be many areas within your job where you can be proactive. This could be the call-center rep who realizes the headsets hurt everyone’s ears after wearing them for 8 hours and puts in a request with her manager to purchase new, more comfortable headsets. If your position is one where being reactive is a key component, think about what areas of your job or your broader life where you do have the space to be proactive… Are there any steps you could take to impact your life and the life of others, and make them more meaningful or efficient?
